Onions And Their Health Benefits

History has it that onions originated from Central Asia in Pakistan. They are close relatives with the garlic, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion.

There are different varieties of Onions. The most widely commonly found are three:

1) Red

This vegetable can be eaten raw, fried, cooked, dried or roasted.

Onions contains lots of fibre and antioxidants and are rich in vitamins A, B, B6 and C. They also contain iron, sulphur, calcium, manganese, phosphorous and potassium. Onions have 45 calories in each 100 grams.

Health Benefits:

Hair Growth

 

It is effective in preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth. As earlier stated onions contains sulphur which promotes blood circulation to the scalp. It also boosts production of collagen that is a necessity for new hair growth.

One teaspoon of honey mixed with two to three drops of lavender essential oil, add the mixture to juice extracted from one onion.

Use the combination to massage your scalp. Cover your hair at least for an hour or you can leave it overnight. This treatment should repeated two to three times a week but remember to wash your hair with water and then shampoo.

Blood sugar regulation

Onion can be of help to diabetic people. Allyl propyl disulphide is a sulphur compound found in onions that helps to increase insulin production that lowers blood glucose levels to both diabetes type 1 and type 2.

Cancer prevention

Phenolic and Flavonoid content found in onion with antioxidant activities helps to fight cancer cells. Consuming onions can prevent breast, prostate, bladder, lung, oral, liver and brain cancer. People at high risk of getting cancer should take at least one onion daily.

Intake of onion regularly can reduce risk conditions like arterial hardening, heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure.

Strong Immunity

The polyphenol content can help boost the immunity. In addition, the selenium mineral helps improve immunity by creating immune response and preventing excessive immune response. Onions helps reduce allergic reactions in your body

Bone density

Onions will make bones very effective for aging women which helps slow the progression of bone loss. Aging women are at high risk of developing osteoporosis.

Asthma treatment

Onions can solve some of the breathing problems and improves asthma symptoms.
